Barbican wedding - a Jewish wedding of Lucy and Josh
I love Barbican, I have always loved it, ever since I moved to London 20 years ago. It’s an utopian project of a living space that has it all - modernity, culture, art, restaurants, beautiful gardens - all in one place, available to all. I love its library (it has the biggest collection of photography books and books about the art of cinema!), I love going to concerts there, to art exhibitions and cinema festivals. But above all, I love hanging out in the conservatory, or, when the weather is good - in the courtyard, with coffee and cake or a glass of wine. It’s my happy place.
So, of course, when Lucy and Josh asked if I wanted to photograph their wedding in the Barbican’s Conservatory, I jumped with enthusiasm and wanted to chat straight away. They love the Barbican Centre as much as I do, so it was an easy (and passionate) pre-wedding consultation :-) They planned a gorgeous, big Jewish wedding, with the ceremony at the Lauderdale Road Synagogue, followed by a reception at the Barbican’s Conservatory (a.k.a rainforest oasis in the centre of the city. I kid you not)
Jewish ceremony at the Lauderdale Road Synagogue
The Lauderdale Road Synagogue is a Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in Maida Vale. It’s quite old and very beautiful (built in 1896) and it’s Lucy and Josh’s local synagogue. For their wedding it was stunningly decorated with flower arches by Nice Bunch, an ethical florist and flower farm. The Chuppah looked incredible, have a look at this stunning Jewish wedding ceremony.
let’s now talk about the Barbican’s conservatory and the couple’s session
After the ceremony, we jumped in a vintage Rolls-Royce (omg, what a car!) and drove to the Barbican Centre, where the reception was already set up up in the Conservatory. We had a quick look (stunning!) and proceeded to take some couples portraits in the glorious Conservatory, before the guests arrival. The Barbican's conservatory is a paradise nestled within the heart of London's iconic Barbican Centre. This lush sanctuary offers visitors a captivating escape from the urban hustle and bustle and to have it ALL just to myself and my couple was just a dream.
Housing a diverse collection of exotic plants, trees, and cacti, the conservatory is a testament to nature's resilience in an architectural marvel. With its glass roof allowing natural light to filter through, the conservatory provides a peaceful setting for contemplation and appreciation of the natural world, making it a unique and cherished gem in the midst of the city's concrete jungle. We walked around it, stopping and appreciating it and the results are:

After the portrait session with the bride and groom, the guests started arriving and the Conservatory was filled with buzz, music and laughter. Glorious! Let’s have a look at the reception setting:
